On Encyclopedia:
The desire to describe the entire world in a loyal, faultless way is usually associated with the monumental Grand French Encyclopedia. In the past, we used to reach for one of the encyclopedias on the shelf and, having read the entry, we would believe that the world was described reliably. And thus it was stable. In her “Encyclopedia” project, Weronika Gęsicka encourages to examine the phenomenon of deliberately erroneous entries in encyclopedic publications. She not only collects the lexicons and encyclopedias in which they appeared, but also creates images based on them. She illustrates these false entries with false, manipulated photographs, creating such relationship: untrue verbal message-untrue visual message. The artist’s project draws the viewer in and forces to think about where the knowledge we cherish as true comes from.
It sensitizes us to the phenomena: the proliferation of false information, the disappearance of certainty in the field of knowledge and the influence of artificial intelligence in shaping reality, but above all it seeks to initiate social reflection. The artist points to the need to develop critical thinking skills and verify information, diagnosing it as fundamental to our continued existence.
