The JAZZ W FILMIE.PL Festival, the first festival devoted exclusively to Polish films with jazz in the background, was accompanied by a multimedia exhibition of more than 60 photographs, Jazz Camping 59 by Wojciech Plewiński, a photographic documentation of the meeting of Polish jazzmen and filmmakers at Kalatówki at the turn of 1959 and 1960.
Plewiński was commissioned to make a photo reportage of the event by Marian Eile, editor-in-chief of “Przekrój”, who tried to keep up to date with cultural events in Poland and the world. At that time, the most eminent Polish jazz musicians, such as Wanda Warska, Katarzyna Gaertner, Krzysztof Komeda, Zbigniew Namysłowski, Jan Ptaszyn Wróblewski and Andrzej Dąbrowski, gathered at the PTTK Kalatówki mountain hotel, accompanied by their husbands, wives and various closer and further acquaintances. Jan Zylberg was the initiator and good spirit behind the event, and the audience included a large number of now-legendary Polish artists, including Grażyna Hasse, Barbara Kwiatkowska, Teresa Tuszyńska, Roman Polański and Janusz Morgernstern. Those “from down under”, i.e. jazz enthusiasts from Zakopane, came in large numbers.
Wojciech Plewiński, in his customary manner, did not just concentrate on the commissioned documentation of the concerts, but carefully observed everything around him, the event and its participants. From breakfasts in pyjamas, ending with Roman Polanski dancing on the table, to crazy snow battles, skiing on Kasprowy Wierch, to the creations of the ladies and gentlemen. Many of these photos later found their way into Przekroj, not least in its coverage of Jazz Camping. Portraits of women found their way onto the covers, and their outfits illustrated fashion texts. This is how an extraordinary collection of photographs was created, which are a moving record not only of the Polish jazz scene. It is a picture of the life of the young generation of the late 1950s, full of love for music, joy of life and being together. Asked what stuck in his memory most from those times, Wojciech Plewiński answers without hesitation – “the skis”.
