One Work Show is a series of exhibitions featuring single pieces selected from the oeuvre of Jednostka’s artists. Each item on display is unique and has not been shown in the Gallery previously. Often, they are unique objects or the last copies available in the edition or print run. Every One Work Show offers an opportunity for you to focus on the details of works and the underlying concepts, as well as to learn the stories behind their creation.
The first work on display is the famous photograph by Rafał Milach depicting the activist Bianka Nwolisa (10 years old) with a banner reading ‘Stop Calling Me Murzyn [Negro].’ The picture was taken in June 2020 during a protest in front of the US Embassy against police brutality towards African-American communities, which was triggered by the death of Georg Floyd.
The photograph sparked a heated debate in both traditional and social media. As a result of the discussion among linguists, the Council for the Polish Language approved the opinion of one of its members, Marek Łaziński, who recommended that the word ‘Negro’ should not be used otherwise ‘than a historical quote’, because ‘it has acquired exceptionally strong offensive connotations in the Polish language’.
The Jednostka Gallery will offer 30 copies sized 50 x 40 m. 50% of the proceeds from the sale will be transferred to the Porta Foundation, which supports people struggling with exclusion and discrimination.
