The fall artistic season in the capital begins this year with a special showing of contemporary art from Ukraine. Over a dozen reputed Warsaw galleries are showing exhibitions and presentations of Ukrainian friends, artists, druhy.
The war in Ukraine has prompted us to take a closer look at what is happening in contemporary Ukrainian art. Their arts scene is pulsing with life, full of fascinating figures: political, uncompromising, poetic, subtle, monumental, addressing history and politics, but also their personal inner turmoils. From a Warsaw perspective, we can see many similarities, but there is also a difference which is hard to pin down, arising from the fact that the recent histories of our countries are do different.
Druh druha means “a friend of a friend” in Polish and Ukrainian. We’re friends, though we aren’t so well acquainted. Druh druha is a joint initiative of a group of Warsaw galleries arising from the conviction that our neighbor’s art has been underrepresented, particularly in the private galleries. And although a war is the worst of all pretexts, when faced with tragic events we want to stick together, building partnerships based on the power and potential of art.
At the exhibitions prepared by our galleries, we will see work by the most interesting Ukrainian artists of various generations, including those who are presently living and working outside of their country.
