She hates repetitive motifs and is constantly seeking to experiment with form and material. Reaching for press clippings from contemporary dailies and lifestyle magazines, she engages in a play with aesthetics that she often refers to as ‘trashy.’ Magda Kucharska admits that this ‘trash’ is a source of never-ending inspiration for her. She likes ‘justifiable trash’ – such that is used consciously and for a purpose.
Her hand-made collages are unique not only for the technique she employs, but also for the commentary on reality conceived by the artist. Kucharska carefully observes the surrounding reality and human nature. With her works, she reflects on a breadth of issues – ranging from love relationships, family and social ties, religion, pop culture, to politics and the climate crisis.
The combination of the classic non-digital collage technique with materials from contemporary colour magazines is not just a dialogue between the past and the present, but also a reflection on the future.
Magda Kucharska says about herself that she is like a tree that has been growing for a long time, has seen a lot, and looks at things with a distance. This makes her collages saturated with a sense of humour and irony. There is also a large dose of self-mockery in them. As well as joy of creation.
‘Cutting Remarks’ is the first solo exhibition of Magda Kucharska, who is befriended with the Jednostka Gallery.
